All of the Caribbean coast of Riviera Maya is simply delightful, with its classic natural settings of white sand, shallow turquoise waters, colourful reefs and hundreds of palm trees. Without a doubt this is paradise at its best, but still, there are even more impressive places to discover, as it is the case of Isla Mujeres, an island full of surprises that we encourage you to visit during your vacation in Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort. Do you want to discover more about this unique island?

Isla Mujeres is a great place for a day trip, as its dimensions, 500 meters wide and 7’5 km long, make it very accessible and is very close to the coast of Riviera Maya, at only twenty minutes with the ferry. Once there you will discover that this place has many kilometers of coast that envelop the whole island and where you’ll find all kinds of services and amenities. Here are some tips for you to enjoy Isla Mujeres to the max.

How To Get To Isla Mujeres

As it is an island that is at short distance from Riviera Maya, only 13 km, there are several ports that cover the route between the peninsula and the island. From Cancún, the main tourist resort of the area, ferries depart frequently reaching the island in just twenty minutes. The boats depart every half hour from Puerto Juarez, but there are also other alternative trips provided by private companies which depart from other points of the coast.

What To See

As we already mentioned, the coast is one of the main attractions of Isla Mujeres, as it boasts the exuberant beauty of Caribbean beaches. Among them, Playa Norte is very popular, a kind of shallow bay that gives you the sensation of going into a tropical swimming pool.

Furthermore, the island is also rich in archaeological sites, especially those dedicated to the fertility goddess Ixchel as well as ‘Tumba del Caracol’ (Tomb of the Snail), located northeast of Faro. Faro is the southernmost point of the island where you’ll find works of art scattered around nature.

It is also very interesting to visit the small fishing village located in the northern part of the island, enjoying nature in the National Park of El Garrafón and discovering the secrets of Hacienda Mundaca, a place with many pirate legends in the heart of the island. And, of course, the reefs that surround the island and the Tortugranja which helps preserve the turtles of the area are two of the main attractions that every visitor should see in Isla Mujeres.

What To Do

Even though it is a small island, the possibilities are endless. In its wonderful beaches, you can enjoy a pleasant swim as well as try its great cuisine. We also highly recommend to rent a bicycle and discover the rest of the island, it’s well worth it.

As well, fans of the sea and water sports are welcome to Isla Mujeres as there is a wide range of these activities. For example, going for a kayak excursion through the Garrafón Natural Park and snorkeling or scuba diving on its impressive reefs. You’ll even find alongside the Manchones Reef the impressive Cancun Underwater Art Museum, a unique place in the world where you can admire art in a different way.

To end the day, nothing better than heading to Playa Norte before leaving the island and saying goodbye to such an intense day with the most splendid sunset of the entire Riviera Maya. Without a doubt Isla Mujeres will be the most complete excursion to enjoy your holiday!
